Senior Grassroots and Political Affair Specialist -- American Physical Therapy Association

Senior Grassroots and Political Affair Specialist Principal Functions: • Collaborate with Director of Grassroots & Political Affairs regarding APTA’s grassroots program. o The Senior Grassroots and Political Affairs Specialist works with the Director to prepare communications to the grassroots networks. Typical communications include information bulletins, action alerts, letters to members of Congress and social media communications. • Develop and strengthen APTA’s Federal Affairs Liaisons and Key Contacts programs. o The Senior Grassroots and Political Affairs Specialist works with component leaders to locate and recruit Federal Affairs Liaisons for state chapters and APTA sections. The Senior Specialist works with the Federal Affairs Liaisons to recruit Key Contacts for each member of Congress. The Senior Specialist is responsible for providing educational materials to assist with advocacy efforts to Federal Affairs Liaisons and Key Contacts. The Senior Specialist also works with component leaders, Federal Affairs Liaisons and Key Contacts to identify gaps in the grassroots advocacy network. Finally, the Senior Specialist conducts monthly conference calls with the Federal Affairs Liaisons to discuss current federal and regulatory issues as well as advocacy strategies. • Educate and grow APTA’s grassroots networks. o The Senior Specialist is responsible for educating and encouraging members to join the grassroots network. The Senior Specialist provides Information Bulletins, Action Alerts, and a quarterly newsletter to grassroots members. These materials keep the grassroots network up-to-date on current federal and regulatory issues. The Senior Specialist responds to member inquiries regarding grassroots, advocacy, and current APTA federal issues, and encourages members to join the PTeam. • Assist in planning the Federal Advocacy Forum and other advocacy activities throughout the year. o The Senior Grassroots and Political Affairs Specialist helps the Director plan the Federal Advocacy Forum each year, as well as targeted Congressional fly-ins. The Senior Specialist also oversees the Student Advocacy Challenge, and assists with planning and organizing other advocacy events as necessary. The Senior Specialist also works with APTA’s Federal Affairs Liaisons, Key Contacts, and grassroots network to schedule and organize practice visits and district office visits with policy makers. The Senior Specialist also provides town hall meeting information to the grassroots network. • Coordinate with staff in all APTA units to promote grassroots and advocacy. o The Senior Grassroots and Political Affairs Specialist is responsible for identifying and promoting opportunities to educate APTA members on advocacy and grassroots initiatives. The Senior Specialist must work with APTA staff throughout the association to coordinate promotion of these initiatives and ensure message consistency across all APTA publications, media, and web platforms. • Represent APTA at meetings and various speaking events throughout the year. o The Senior Grassroots and Political Affairs Specialist is required to give updates on APTA’s grassroots network at various APTA meetings. The Senior Specialist also speaks at various Association, student and external events regarding grassroots and advocacy strategies as assigned. • Assist the Director of Grassroots and Political Affairs with the PT-PAC. o The Senior Grassroots and Political Affairs Specialist will travel with the Director of Grassroots and Political Affairs to various conferences and meetings throughout the year to assist with fundraising for the PT-PAC. The Senior Specialist will also help plan and organize PT-PAC events as necessary. • Represent APTA on Capitol Hill through meetings and fundraisers. o The Senior Grassroots and Political Affairs Specialist attends fundraisers and meets with members of Congress and staff to discuss current APTA federal issues.
